MultiChoice Group is expanding its slate of authentic African storytelling with the upcoming drama series 'Queen Modjadji'. The show will explore the rich cultural heritage of South Africa's Lobedu people and their revered Rain Queen.
"Bringing Queen Modjadji to our audiences meets their desire for television entertainment drawn from our heritage," said Nomsa Philiso, MultiChoice Group CEO for General Entertainment. "It also flows seamlessly into our plans to create a catalogue of drama series made in African languages."
The announcement comes on the heels of the global success of MultiChoice's Zulu historical drama Shaka iLembe. Queen Modjadji aims to capture that same level of authentic African storytelling.
Production is already underway by Rhythm World Productions. The team has been conducting extensive research and consultations with Lobedu tribal leaders, stakeholders, and academic experts to ensure cultural accuracy. Scripting, casting, and pre-production are nearing completion before filming begins.
Renowned poet, playwright and producer Duma Ndlovu is leading the creative vision. His goal is to craft a compelling drama that enlightens viewers about Lobedu traditions while entertaining with strong storylines.
"The earth, elements, and human energy connect physically and spiritually," Ndlovu explained. "Queen Modjadji embodied this connection, so we'll explore what this royal title meant - the lives, sacrifices, losses and achievements of the women who held it."
The series intends to balance historical realism with high drama set against the unpredictable weather of the region, where "rain or storm echoes what is happening in the lives of those below."
Queen Modjadji represents MultiChoice's continuous investment in original African content made in local languages for global audiences. The drama promises a immersive look at South African culture through the lens of its legendary Rain Queen tradition.
