New Sekhukhune Skills Centre to Uplift Local Community

On 3 May 2024, the Minister of Higher Education, Science and Innovation, Prof Blade Nzimande, officially launched the R146 million Sekhukhune Skills Development Centre in Groblersdal, Limpopo. This state-of-the-art training facility is funded by the Wholesale and Retail Sector Education and Training Authority (W&RSETA) and housed at the Sekhukhune TVET College.

The centre is named after the Sekhukhune region, home to the Bapedi people and the legendary 19th century king Sekhukhune I who fiercely resisted colonial rule. By naming it after this iconic leader who championed his people's rights, the centre aims to inspire local youth to develop valuable artisanal skills and secure sustainable livelihoods.

Addressing the dire shortage of artisans in South Africa, the facility will help achieve the government's National Development Plan target of producing 30,000 new artisans per year by 2030. Its location in the underdeveloped Sekhukhune area also brings skills training closer to remote communities facing high unemployment.

In addition to technical instruction, the multifaceted project includes an incubation program for 45 informal traders and construction of market stalls. This holistic approach provides opportunities for entrepreneurship and economic empowerment within the surrounding communities.

Top dignitaries expected at the launch include Limpopo Premier Stanley Mathabatha and Education MEC Mavhungu Lerule-Ramakhanya. Their presence underscores the strategic importance of the Sekhukhune Skills Development Centre as a catalyst for skills development and inclusive growth in the province.
